<p><i>Pyrococcus</i> hat ähnliche Eigenschaften wie andere thermo<a href="Autotroph" class="mw-redirect" title="Autotroph">autotrophe</a> Archaeen wie <i><a href="Thermococcus" title="Thermococcus">Thermococcus</a></i>, <i><a href="Archaeoglobus" title="Archaeoglobus">Archaeoglobus</a></i> und <i><a href="Methanococcus" title="Methanococcus">Methanococcus</a></i>, da sie alle <a href="Thermophil" class="mw-redirect" title="Thermophil">thermophil</a> und <a href="Anaerob" class="mw-redirect" title="Anaerob">anaerob</a> sind. <i>Pyrococcus</i> unterscheidet sich jedoch von <i>Archaeoglobus</i> und <i>Methanococcus</i> dadurch, dass seine optimale Wachstumstemperatur bei fast 100 <a href="Celsius" class="mw-redirect" title="Celsius">°C</a> liegt und die Gattung in größeren Meerestiefen als die anderen vorkommt. Die Erforschung von <i>Pyrococcus</i> liefert Erkenntnisse über mögliche Mechanismen, mit denen extreme Umweltbedingungen wie hohe Temperaturen und hoher Druck überstanden werden können.<sup id="cite_ref-Fiala1986_3-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Fiala1986-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

Der wichtigste <a href="Stoffwechselweg" title="Stoffwechselweg">Stoffwechselweg</a> ist die Peptidfermentation. Bei <i>P. furiosus</i> und <i>P. abyssi</i> wurde ein Wachstum auf <a href="St%C3%A4rke" title="Stärke">Stärke</a>, <a href="Maltose" title="Maltose">Maltose</a> und <a href="Pyruvat" class="mw-redirect" title="Pyruvat">Pyruvat</a> beobachtet, nicht jedoch bei <i>P. horikoshii</i>. <p><i>Pyrococcus</i>-Arten leben in <a href="Habitat" title="Habitat">Umgebungen</a> mit extrem hohen Temperaturen, wie beispielsweise <a href="Hydrothermalquelle" class="mw-redirect" title="Hydrothermalquelle">Hydrothermalquellen</a>. Optimale Wachstumsbedingungen sind ein <a href="PH-Wert" title="PH-Wert">pH-Wert</a> von etwa 7, eine Salzkonzentration von etwa 2,5 % (25 <a href="Gramm" title="Gramm">g</a>/<a href="Liter" title="Liter">ℓ</a>) und eine Temperatur von etwa 98 <a href="Celsius" class="mw-redirect" title="Celsius">°C</a>.
Da in ihren Habitaten kaum <a href="Sauerstoff" title="Sauerstoff">Sauerstoff</a> verfügbar ist, leben sie verständlicherweise <a href="Anaerob" class="mw-redirect" title="Anaerob">anaerob</a>.
